EC Engineering Inc.

EC Engineering Inc. was founded by Dave Harris, P.Eng., a registered professional chemical / environmental engineer with over 40 years’ experience in the drinking water supply industry. Initially, Dave was involved primarily in treatment system operations and maintenance, and moved later into water system design as a process engineer with one of Canada’s major consulting engineering firms.

As a design consultant with an operations background, he recognized the importance of adequate laboratory- and pilot-scale testing and evaluation procedures to successful design and effective operation of water treatment processes. To this end, he was directly responsible for the design, construction, and operation of two mobile trailer-mounted pilot water treatment test facilities, which have been used extensively for evaluation of water treatment processes across Canada. One of these pilot systems was specifically designed for testing dissolved air flotation, and is the only unit of its type in Canada (and one of only two in North America). Results obtained from this pilot unit were used in the process design of the first two full-scale DAF plants in Western Canada, which have now been operating successfully for many years.

Much of this pilot work involved on-site activities, which had to be preceded by bench-scale preliminary testing. It quickly became clear that none of the commercially-available equipment was very well suited to on-site jar test work. For the most part, it was bulky, heavy, difficult to transport, and subject to a variety of problems in actual use. In some cases, such as for work with dissolved air flotation, no such equipment was available in North America. Dave therefore undertook to design and build, on his own time, equipment that would be more suitable for the type of work he was doing. This proved to be very successful, and the equipment was found to be a real improvement in terms of economy, portability, and usability. Requests for their own units by many people who saw them eventually led Dave to make the decision to form his own company,
EC Engineering, to manufacture and sell the equipment.

Since its formation, ECE has supplied equipment to a wide variety of users in more than 40 countries around the world. As a small, employee-owned company we remain dedicated to the ongoing improvement of our existing jar tester products and development of new ones, and responsive to the needs and desires of our customers and clients.
